Adventures in Babysitting: Family Portraits across Southern California

Updated: Oct 21, 2019

This is my friend Kim with her two beautiful daughters Sophia and Gillian, and I have had the privilege of taking family pictures for them for the past 5 holiday seasons.

The funny thing is that I have actually known Kim since she was the age Sophia was when we first took photos because she was the first person my parents trusted to babysit my little sister and I after she was born (we're 7 years apart).

Kim has been a huge influence in my life, both as a child and an adult. Thanks to her, I know all about Depeche Mode and The Smiths. I remember sitting with her watching Kevin Arnold kiss Winnie Cooper for the first time. She has been here for me as life has happened through adulthood, and guided me when I needed someone like a big sister.

Our photo adventures have always been epic. Usually calendared for Veterans Day, when we would all have the day off from work/school, Kim and her girls would choose a special location and plan out their outfits, down to coordinating Chucks.

Over the years we have visited Downtown Fullerton, Old Town Temecula, Balboa Park, Joshua Tree, and Laguna Beach. The day always starts at Starbucks and, once caffeinated, is full of fun and laughter.

Things will be a little different this year, with Sophia graduating high school and headed off to college, but I know we will find a way to continue our photo tradition. I have had so much fun watching these young ladies grow up - although they bicker as sisters will - I know that they will always be there for each other, no matter what, as built-in best friends.
